Comic adventures of an educator with the students of a New York City adult preparatory night school. The students come from all over Europe to escape World War II and find a new home in America. However, a prerequisite is an English exam, which for many of them is a superhuman task. The zealous Mr. Kaplan tackles the foreign language with incredible verve, indomitable energy and a very peculiar logic. Unique verbal humour alternates with homesickness, poignant situations are interspersed with hilarious ones - and all of this is complemented by an array of songs and dances from around the world.
