Films in which water puppets play a key role have been appearing in our country since the first films with Spejbl and Hurvínek, through the key works of Jan Švankmajer to the present day. The success of films such as Cuckoo Returns and The Little Master in recent decades shows that this is still a living phenomenon. The exhibition Water Puppets in Czech Film explores this theme for the first time. Various characters from feature films and short films will be on display, as well as sets, environments, illustrations, sketches and other art objects. The exhibition is thematically linked to the Anifilm festival (7-12 May 2024, Liberec) and timed to coincide with the premiere of the anticipated feature film The Great Lord (March 2024).
The exhibition, prepared for the North Bohemian Museum by the Anifilm International Festival of Animated Films, focuses on a borderline cinematic form, moving between film and theatre.
