Luděk Pachman, chess grandmaster, pedagogue, publicist and political activist, was born in 1924 in Bělá pod Bezdězem. He represented Czechoslovakia at several chess Olympiads. After the Second World War he joined the Communist Party, but the events of 1968 changed his beliefs. He was persecuted for his anti-communist attitudes and emigrated in 1972. He continued to play chess, but after his Czechoslovak citizenship was revoked he represented Germany. This year's 100th anniversary of his birth is commemorated with an exhibition dedicated to his personality.
