Nineties, Banpo, Chinese countryside. A woman's body is found by the river. The murder investigation is led by Ma Zhe, head of the criminal police, and very soon he arrests the alleged perpetrator. His superiors are quick to boast of their success, but a few clues prompt Ma Zhe to delve deeper into the mysterious actions of his fellow citizens... Director Wei Shujun plays with the detective genre in a distinctive and wry way. His third feature film (after Striding Into The Wind and Ripples Of Life) is an adaptation of Yu Hua's short story Mistakes By The River.
