Nowhere does he feel at home, so it is no big problem for him to take a shift in a remote corner of Bulgaria, where a German crew is to build a hydroelectric power plant in difficult conditions. The remote wilderness, the language barrier and the strangers who know nothing about him allow Meinhard to tell a different story about himself and act as a hero and protector of the weak. In a place where people understand each other better without words, he feels an urgent desire to belong. Even at the cost of alienating his compatriots, who look down on the natives and make no effort to maintain good relations.
