One of the most acclaimed titles of the 1960s, it won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968. It also occupies a special place in domestic cinema. Jiří Menzel's feature debut is considered the pinnacle of the Czechoslovak New Wave. The adaptation of Bohumil Hrabal's novella is the story of a shy young man, Miloš Hrma, who tries to become a man in the dreamy world of a Central Bohemian railway station at the end of the Second World War.
