The paths of Ridina Ahmedová and Petr Tichý have been intertwined for almost twenty years. They met in jazz formations, then played together in the Floex project. "Now the time has come to fulfill an old dream - to try playing original music just like this, acoustically, pure, naked and without the usual exposure to other accompanying instruments," say both musicians.
"It was also important for us to build the whole project so that we were equal partners. That is, not a singer and an accompanist, but two instruments moving freely in a common musical space." In fact, the third member of their formation became a loopstation, a device that allows them to record in multiple tracks over each other. "We use it in almost all of our compositions. It allows us to create 'sound architecture' and work with harmonic and melodic richness," explains Ridina Ahmed. In some places, the number of layered voices normally reaches eight to ten or even thirteen.
"Our goal was not to create the densest composition possible, but a landscape that one would like to return to," says Petr Tichý. Playing in such a chamber ensemble is an intense experience for both of them: "It brings us tight constraints set by the simple instrumentation, but also great freedom. There's a fragility and a strength, because when there are only two instruments, they can connect very closely. It's an intense journey for us into the sheer joy of sound."
Ridina Ahmedova is an expressive singer with Czech-Sudanese roots and a wealth of musical experience. She has been involved in a number of musical projects and was also invited to sing a duet with Bobby McFerrin at his Prague concert. She has written music for several theatre performances (most recently Eymen - Dance Prague 2019).
Petr Tichý is a double bassist whose musical range extends from freejazz to electroswing to classical music. He collaborates with a long list of musicians and composers and also composes and arranges himself.
Doors: 17:00
