South America is a continent that hides many contrasts. Inhospitable and beautiful deserts washed by the ocean, steep peaks of mountains tearing the clouds, but also an endless and impenetrable forest full of life. Indians in their traditional dress sit in the street as an army of tuk tuks zigzag chaotically around them. Shabby buildings of unplastered brick sprawl into the surrounding hills, and many of its nooks and crannies still remember drug cartel shootouts. To make matters worse, the abandoned ruins of ancient Andean civilizations silently watch from afar.
Martin Grosman spent four months travelling in South America, during which time he explored Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile. He nearly got lost in the mountains of Colombia, canoed into the Amazon jungle, walked across the mountains to Machu Pichu, and quietly watched flamingos in the world's driest desert. And all the while, he traveled to be as close to local life as possible.
