Gabriela Preissová Gabriela Preissová (1862-1946) wrote Gazdina roba at the age of twenty-seven, the play was immediately staged at the National Theatre (1889) and its success caused one of the most tumultuous scandals in Czech theatre history. The passionate dispute between the proponents of late Romanticism and the pioneers of Realism somewhat overshadowed the extraordinary fact that Preissová wrote a pure and classical tragedy, one of the few in Czech literature, bold and disturbing, so that it always attracts new generations of theatregoers and audiences, and offers rarely dramatic characters and situations. The village here represents a world with strict order and rigid rituals, against which the hot human heart rebels, but encounters the cruel company of broken and cold hearts. Director Martin Františák understands the village drama in its eternal and raw struggle of life and death, and he knows how to feel the living theatrical blood in it and follow its flow in the element of acting. His production of Sylva, based on Karolina Světlá's novel The Village, brought the Liberec ensemble to two prestigious international shows. However, this is the first time that the drama company has presented Gazdina roba in its original dramatic form in Liberec!

A masterpiece of Czech theatre classics.
