The film is a love letter from the young mother Waad al-Kateab to her daughter Sama. Written over a time period of five years, she tells of her life in insurgent Aleppo, where she falls in love, gets married and has her child while the devastating civil war wreaks ever more destruction. In a very moving and immediate way, her camera shows loss, survival and the joy in life in the midst of suffering. Waad must decide whether she flees and brings her daughter to safety or stays and continues the fight for the freedom for which she has already paid so dearly.
