Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater...

Opening ceremony of the 20th Neiße Film Festival with the film "Franky Five Star" and music by DJ Ludmila Pogodina in the theater foyer.

During the opening event the program, juries and other highlights of the 20th Neiße Film Festival will be presented and the mood set for the coming festival days.

You can see the German feature film "Franky Five Star" by Birgit Möller, a fairytale, surreal tragic comedy about the search for oneself, which counters the self-optimization mania of our society with humor and imagination. Director Birgit Möller invites you to an enchanting Belle Époque hotel – the inner workings of her protagonist Franky. Here, an illustrious company argues about the big issues in Franky's life: love, friendship, growing up and the search for oneself - with profound and sometimes absurd consequences for Franky's reality. In the role of the lovable heroine, Lena Urzendowsky proves her versatility and equips all facets of her character with virtuosity and authenticity.

After the film, you can end the evening in the cinematic community and with musical accompaniment from DJ Ludmila Pogodina in the theater foyer. The artist and activist from Belarus has long worked for independent media and went on to co-found the art collective #KeepMinskWeird. The group realizes social and art projects from festivals to interview podcasts. These formats are used as a platform to invite local communities to talk. It's about culture and human rights, feminism and LGBTQ+, freedom of opinion and speech, equality and diversity. As "DJ Pogodina", Ludmila relies on a diverse selection of music: from punk and hip-hop to pagan roots and the darkest waves of the musical universe. For her, music is a tool and dancing a ritual with which she can convey her messages. From May 23rd to 28th the festival itself offers a full program with around 90 films in three competitions and various film series as well as exhibitions in the border triangle on the Neisse , concerts and more. The focus series of the 20th festival edition is dedicated to the legacy of the former Soviet Union under the title "Post Sovjet Union". The highlight is the concert by the Russian band Pussy Riot on May 27th in Görlitz.
