"The Nutcracker" was an overwhelming hit with the public when it premiered in Saint Petersburg in 1892 - and it still is today! In the romantic Christmas fiarytale "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" by E.T.A. Hoffmann gives little Klara a nutcracker as a gift, which comes to life at night and, after bad entanglements, turns into a good fairytale prince in her dreams.
The ballet music for this fairytale, composed by Peter Iljitsch Tschaikowsky, promises all viewers, big and small, an entertaining treat at Christmas time. With the Nutcracker, Tchaikovsky received the long-deserved and longed-for recognition a year before his untimely death.
