North Korea is a country that is completely cut off from its surroundings. There is no choice or any form of freedom. Pastor Kim, who assists the refugees, never stops his phone ringing. From his home in South Korea, he and his smuggling network organise escapes from the neighbouring country. At the heart of the film is the story of a mother trying to reunite with her son after ten years, and a family of five who want a better future for their children. But successfully crossing the border into China is just the beginning of a harrowing journey filled with military patrols and farmers who turn in refugees for a living. In the end, there are no other options than death in the gulag or awakening to a new world.


Individuals and entire families are trying to escape from North Korea. With a treacherous journey across a wild river, inhospitable Chinese mountains and the Vietnamese forest, Pastor Kim, a man who has dedicated his life to God and helping the refugees, tries to help them.
