The trio is able to play the songs with drive thanks to its originality, carefully played routine and enormous skill. Walter Fischbacher improvises unbridled and unrestrained; the notes bubble out of his piano, it's a joy. Concerto, Austria, Feb 2023.
With this creation, a musical circle closes for the New York-based pianist Walter Fischbacher and his trio. The musical language expands with a range of different influences: from odd-meter arrangements in the style of Avishai Cohen to Latin grooves, with a dash of blues. Walter Fischbacher's unmistakable reharmonizations enrich the reinterpretation of each piece without losing sight of the essence of the source material.
Also on board are the highly sought-after Czech bassist Petr Dvorsky and the German star drummer Ulf Stricker. The Phishbachers are absolute experts when it comes to shooting a piece of music into the stratosphere while simultaneously driving their rhythmic roots deep into the earth. Each piece shines with a joy of playing and just enough control to see the band gliding along the edge. It is this flirtation with the fall, the controlled madness that enlivens simple melodies. Deeply familiar and at the same time enchanting, the electrifying trio in Plays the Beatles elevates jazz to cult status.
